The Steuben Arts Scene is a group of community-minded residents who love art and desire to inspire, nurture and enrich lives through the arts. Steuben Arts Scene is hosting a variety of youth classes throughout 2024. The cost is $20 per class and all classes are held at The Gallery, 101 W. Maumee St. in downtown Angola.

Picture Collage

Attendees will use a collection of papers and shapes to create a landscape.

Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m.-noon, ages 8-10

Polymer Clay Miniatures

Learn some easy clay techniques using creative thinking skills. Polymer clay is clay that cooks in a small oven at 300 degrees for 20 minutes. We will design a miniature clay scene and create shrinky dinkey chains.

Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m.-noon, ages 9-14

Block Printmaking

Design and create a series of prints from a block that’s created on-scene. Learn about the printing process and how lives are touched by the printing process today. Also examine the prints created by the Japanese printmaker Hokusai.

Tuesday and Thursday, June 11 and 13, 10 a.m.-noon, ages 6-7

Clay Pinch Pot Characters

Learn the preparation process and the history of Native American Indian potter Maria Martinez. Create pinch pot animals with assorted texted and patterns. Bring a spare shirt to wear as a cover up.

Tuesday and Thursday, June 18 and 27, 10 a.m.-noon, ages 11-13

Paper Making

Students will learn the craft of paper-making with scraps of paper and items from nature. The finished products will be unique and ready for framing.

Paper Weaving

Learn to weave with a variety of materials.

Tuesday, June 25, 10 a.m.-noon, ages 8-10

Fiber Needle Felting

Needle felting is wool that has been stabbed together with a needle. Create either creatures or a landscape.

Tuesday, July 9, 1-3 p.m., ages 12-18

Kandisnky’s Tree

Kids will learn how to draw and shade a tree with lively colors using Wassily Kandisnky’s dot art. Bring a spare shirt to wear as a cover up.

Thursday, July 11 and Tuesday, July 16, 10 a.m.-noon, ages 8-10

Fiber Weaving

Learn how to set up a cardboard loom, three weaving techniques and how to embellish your wall hanging. This class is for the novice weaver.

Tuesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 25, 1-3 p.m., ages 14-18

Bleaching Art Shirt

Students will learn about composition, value of black and white, balance, imagination and upcycling and create a reverse tie dye t-shirt. Bring a spare shirt to wear as a cover up.

Saturday, Sept. 21, 9-11 a.m., ages 11-13

High School Life Drawing

The emphasis will be on gesture drawing, basic anatomy, contour lines, tonal values, perspective and an ongoing enhancement of observational and memory skills manifested through practiced handling of the artists’ medium.

101 Lakes Sauce is an “all purpose sauce good on everything except ice cream and cereal.” Purchase locally at Fremont Village Foods or the Bent Fork in downtown Angola. The sauce is also used on The Venue’s wings!
