Pokagon State Park, nestled on the shores of Lake James, is a picturesque 1,260-acre park with hiking trails, beaches, an interpretive nature center, cross country skiing, boat rental, and guided horse rides.

Pokagon Park is located near Angola, just off I-69. The park was originally called Lake James State Park when proposed to be the fifth Indiana State Park in 1925. The name was changed to Pokagon State Park to acknowledge the rich Native American heritage of the state and region.

Toboggan Run

Pokagon is also home to the state’s only refrigerated toboggan. Open weekends the day after Thanksgiving through the last weekend in February, the toboggan is a great family activity. Toboggans rent for $20 per hour and hold up to four people. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Call (260) 833-2012 for more information.

Potawatomi Inn

Potawatomi Inn Resort & Conference Center offers an indoor pool, smoke-free facility, wireless internet, sauna, beach, restaurant, fitness room, and seven suites. Located in a lush wood setting on the shores of Lake James, it has a variety of overnight rooms and a conference center which offers nine meeting rooms. Trine State Recreation Area

The newly-opened Trine State Recreation Area is also a part of Pokagon State Park. The 186 acres are steeped in natural and cultural history. No private boats are allowed but boat rentals are available. Fishing is allowed from rented boats or the pier. Easy to moderate trails offer hiking opportunities and when there’s enough snow, a large sledding hill is open. Family cabins plus the Wild Turkey Shelter are available to rent.

SNOW SHOE RENTAL

 

Snowshoes are available to rent at the toboggan rental room when the toboggan is open. Snowshoes and poles will be rented when there is a minimum of 4 inches of snow.

The rental fee is $10 per hour.

A driver’s license will be held as a deposit and four sets of equipment may be rented with one driver’s license. Snowshoes may be rented at the same time as a toboggan using the same ID as a deposit for both. The driver’s license will be returned when all equipment is returned and rental charges are settled. Equipment may be rented from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and must be returned to the rental room by 6 p.m.

Snowshoes and poles may be used on all Pokagon trails.

All sizes are available in limited quantities. Rental is first come, first served.

There are also specialty snow shoes for kids, including monster feet and light-up shoes, available for children under 12.
