The Potawatomi Inn overlooks Lake James, Indiana’s third-largest lake. Amenities include a library, staffed activity room, craft, exercise and game rooms plus a gift shop. Two restaurants-one full-service dining room serving three meals a day and a courtyard café-offer delicious entrees and desserts. There are nine hiking trails ranging from easy to rugged just step away from the Potawatomi Inn. Be sure to visit the nature center with interactive exhibits and a variety of nature programs. The refrigerated toboggan at Pokagon State Park opens the day after Thanksgiving and remains open weekends through the end of February.
There are also extended weekday hours near Christmas. Take advantage of the Winter Special Nov. 27, 2022-March 2, 2023: stay two consecutive nights Sunday-Thursday and receive the second night free.

Take a tour into the herd at Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve in Fremont
For those seeking adventure, take a weekend tour into the 150-plus buffalo herd at Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve in Fremont.
Tours are $10 per adult and $7 for children 10 and under and begin on the hour between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturdays November-April. The preserve is open in October Wednesday-Sunday.
The calving season typically begins in mid-May with approximately 50 new calves. A new-born buffalo weighs approximately 35 pounds. Wild Winds, which spans 400 acres, is home to about 150 buffalo.
The gift shop is also open, as well as the log-hewn bed and breakfast.
Steuben County Farmers Market
The Steuben County Farmers Market remains open Wednesdays and Saturdays through the end of October from 8 a.m. to noon.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are plentiful and you’ll also find honey, maple syrup, plants, fresh-cut flowers and homemade craft items.
The Wednesday market is located at 206 N. Wayne St. and the Saturday market is located at 317 S. Wayne St.
Oktoberfest at Timbers Steakhouse & Seafood
Timbers Steakhouse & Seafood hosts Oktoberfest Friday, Oct. 21-Sunday, Oct. 23. Enjoy an authentic German dinner featuring wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, rouladen, bratwurst or knockwurst. Side dishes include spatzle, potato dumplings, red cabbage, hot German potato salad and sauerkraut. Dessert is a black forest cherry torte! Timbers is located at 1212 W. Maumee St., Angola.
Oktoberfest hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Fall Hiking
Pokagon State Park has nine hiking trails, ranging from easy to moderate. Take a walk through the 1,260-acre park as you enjoy the beautiful fall colors and the sounds of leaves crunching under your feet! Angola, Hamilton, Orland and Fremont also have various nature preserves open for hiking.
Stroh Orchard
For all things apple, head to Stroh Orchard in Angola! Open seven days a week, Stroh Orchard has a huge variety of apples along with apple cider, apple butter, caramel apples and more! Check out the pears, squash, honey and pumpkins too. Stroh Orchard is located at 2620 N. State Road 827.
