Potawatomi Inn Sea Plane Splash In

The Annual Sea Plane Splash In that is held at the Potawatomi Inn Beach is always such a spectacle. I’m always amazed and this year, once again, the event did not disappoint. We try to get there early every year to see the countless planes landing, taking off, driving up on the lawn and flying low over the Inn. We also try to enjoy breakfast in the Historic Dining Room.
By the time we got there a line was forming at the entrance of Pokagon and the crowd was growing, so we got there at a good time. We parked and walked to the Inn lawn. There were several types of sea planes on display and it’s amazing how unique each one is.
We were walking around checking out all of the planes and Emi found her friend Hunter. They were both having so much fun watching the planes land and take off. They particularly loved it when the planes would fly really low over the crowd gathered at the Inn.
We made our way further down the lawn and there was a gentleman walking around handing out squishy airplanes. Of course, like several other children, the girls chased him down to get one. Down by the beach there was a tent set up where you could purchase merchandise and they were also raffling off free Sea Plane rides. We sat there and watched for a few minutes while they were calling off the winning numbers and the pure excitement on the winner’s faces was enough to put a smile on anyone’s face.
Everyone started to get hungry so we went and had an awesome brunch in the Historic Dining Room of the Inn. We all got the buffet and the girls really loved being able to pick out whatever they wanted, including dessert. Even though we opted to have brunch in the Historic Dining Room, there were also special concessions set up that offered burgers, hot dogs, drinks, etc. so there was something for everyone to enjoy.
After brunch we met my mother outside on the Inn lawn. She hadn’t been to the Fly-In for a year or two and she was amazed at how many planes there were flying and parked on display. She said that she was so glad she was able to make it and she had a great time. She even told me that my great grandfather was a pilot, so it was cool seeing all of these planes.
As we were finishing up looking at the planes, a pilot drove his plane up on the lawn and once he parked, he was allowing children to sit in his plane. The girls were so excited and the pilot hoisted them both up in the cockpit for a photo.
As always, we had a great time at the Fly In and it seemed that everyone in attendance was enjoying it as well. This event seems to grow bigger every year, not only with the amount of planes and people on the Potawatomi Inn lawn, but with the amount of people out on the lake and parked at the sand bar. The amount of people that come to see this event is astronomical, it’s definitely one that people come from surrounding areas to not only enjoy the Sea Plane Fly In, but to enjoy Pokagon State Park as a whole.
